Differences Between Original and Non-Certified Apple Lightning Cables.

Briefly about the problem: the market is full of non-certified “Lightning” cables that often do not meet Apple’s requirements and can cause charging, data transfer, and safety issues.

Why Is It Important to Choose Correctly?

“iPhone” and “iPad” “Lightning” cables often wear out faster than the devices themselves. If your cable is broken or charging has become unreliable, choose a new cable very carefully. Cheaply offered “original” cables from ads are often non-certified, which can lead to problems such as:

  • The device does not charge at all or charges very slowly.
  • The cable heats up unusually during charging.
  • The computer does not recognize the connected device or synchronization is interrupted.

Packaging

The packaging of original or Apple-certified (MFi – “Made for iPhone/iPad”) cables has a clearly visible MFi logo and manufacturer information. The MFi certification means that the product uses a compatibility-assuring authentication chip and has passed Apple tests, so such cables usually cost more. Legitimate sales should also indicate the manufacturer and compliance marking (e.g., CE), and the information on the packaging and documents should be clear and consistent.

Labels on the Cable

An original Apple cable has the text “Designed by Apple in California Assembled in China/Vietnam/Indústria Brasileira” and a serial number located about 17–18 cm from the USB connector. Certified cables from other manufacturers often have the manufacturer’s logo on the USB connector and a neat, uniform font without errors or “bleeding” letters.

Differences in the Lightning Connector

The Lightning connector of the original cable is smooth, symmetrical, with precisely rounded edges; the contacts are flush with the casing and do not protrude, and the metal finish is even. Connector dimensions: width – 7 mm, length – 12 mm. Non-certified cable connectors often have uneven or angular contacts, visible molding seams, non-standard dimensions, or multi-part casings.

Differences in the USB Connector

The USB connector contacts of original cables are usually gold-plated, the connector itself is smooth, without roughness, and the internal insulation evenly covers the entire inside of the connector. Non-certified cable USB contacts may be silver-plated, the metal part uneven, the locking holes inaccurate, and the insulation uneven.

How to Avoid Being Deceived When Choosing a Cable?

By following the differences provided, you can reliably distinguish a quality cable. Choose MFi certified products, avoid ads of unclear origin, check the packaging, labels on the cable itself, and the quality of the connector finishes. If you are looking for a quality and affordable option, we recommend cables from certified manufacturers, such as:

  • “Extra Digital”
  • “Anker”
  • “1byone”
  • “Native Union”
  • “Belkin”

These cables, having MFi certification, generally ensure compatibility, stable charging and data transfer, and a lower risk of overheating or failures.
