Battery faults and repairs

• Ageing and capacity loss

  • The iPhone 14 battery, like other lithium-ion batteries, begins to gradually lose capacity after several hundred charge cycles. When the battery health drops below 80%, the phone may exhibit rapid discharge and shorter operating time.

  • Period: after 12-18 months of active use (averaging 1 full cycle per day), a noticeable decrease in capacity occurs.

• High temperature

  • Prolonged use in direct sunlight or intense gaming can raise the phone’s temperature to 40-45 °C, accelerating the chemical reaction in lithium-ion batteries and leading to quicker capacity loss.

• Impact of fast charging

  • Modern fast chargers (20 W and above) charge the iPhone 14 to about 50% in ~30-40 minutes. Such rapid current pulses slightly reduce the overall cycle lifespan, although Apple’s battery management algorithms compensate for some of the effects.

• Damaged charging ports and power IC

  • In addition to chip damage (“Tristar”/”Hydra”/”Kraken”), frequent stuttering when the phone alternates between charging and discharging stages can result in no charging at all or termination of charging for part of the battery.

• Battery swelling

  • A swollen battery can expand the housing, lift the screen and leave gaps at the corners. Stop charging and arrange immediate replacement because of the increased explosion risk.

Screen and glass replacement

• Glass (Gorilla Glass) replacement

  • The iPhone 14 uses a 0.27 mm thick curved “Ion-X” high durability (“Gorilla Glass Victus”) glass. If only the thin protective glass layer cracks after a fall, the OLED and touch layer remain intact (i.e., the quality of the actual screen is unaffected). In this case, only the restructured, laminated glass is replaced using UV-curing adhesives to ensure the bondings are as thin as possible and visually indistinguishable from the original.

• Full screen (OLED module) replacement

  • iPhone 14 Super Retina XDR OLED module:

    • Dimensions: 6.1 inches (“diagonally”), aspect ratio 19.5:9.

    • Specific dimensions: 146.7 mm height × 71.5 mm width.

    • Resolution: 2532 × 1170 pixels (~460 ppi).

    • Brightness: 2,000,000:1 contrast, HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.

    • Refresh rate: dynamic “ProMotion” (1 Hz to 120 Hz, depending on content).

  • The full module is replaced when the OLED layer thread is damaged, point RGB color degradation occurs (black or white spots), uneven local brightness, or “Screen Burn” (persistent image retention).
