Foldable iPhone – Review
technological vision and market reality
While Samsung, Google, and Huawei have dominated the foldable phone market for several years, Apple adheres to its usual strategy: not rushing to be first but aiming to be the best. In this article, we will review the current situation, technological challenges, and patents that are shaping Apple’s future masterpiece.
Clamshell vs. Book-style
Based on leaked information from supply chains, Apple is experimenting with two main form factors:
Clamshell:
Similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. This is a compact, square-folding device focused on style and portability.
Book-style:
Similar to the Z Fold or Pixel 9 Pro Fold. When unfolded, it transforms into a small tablet, possibly even replacing the iPad mini.
Most analysts, including Ming-Chi Kuo, suggest that Apple is leaning towards the larger screen format to maximize multitasking capabilities.
Display and the Crease problem
The main reason Apple has not yet released a foldable device is the durability and aesthetic appearance of the display.
The Crease:
Apple engineers aim to create a display where the folding line is completely invisible and unnoticeable to the touch.
Self-healing:
One of the most interesting patents registered by Apple describes a screen coating that can “heal” minor scratches caused by frequent folding when exposed to heat or light.
Hybrid OLED:
A hybrid OLED panel is likely to be used, combining rigid glass with flexible polymer materials to avoid display “waving.”
Hinge mechanism
The hinge is the heart of any foldable phone. Apple is working on a complex interlocking gear system that would allow the body to be thinner than competitors while maintaining structural integrity. The goal is to achieve a gapless design, preventing dust from entering when the device is folded.
iPadOS or a new version of iOS?
Hardware without the right software is worthless. The Foldable iPhone will feature:
- Continuity: Smooth transition from the external display to the main one.
- Split-screen: The ability to use multiple apps simultaneously, optimized for square or 4:3 aspect ratios.
- Flex mode: The ability to use the semi-folded phone as a laptop (e.g., image on top, keyboard on the bottom).
Technical specifications (Forecast)
| Feature | Expected parameters |
|---|---|
| Main display | 7.5 – 8.0 inches LTPO OLED |
| Refresh rate | 1Hz – 120Hz (ProMotion) |
| Processor | A18 Pro or M-series chip |
| Cameras | Periscope telephoto lens |
| Connections | USB-C (Thunderbolt support) |
Conclusions
The Apple foldable device is likely to appear no earlier than the end of 2026 or 2027. The company is waiting for the technology to mature enough to meet its strict quality standards. This will not just be another phone — it will be a hybrid, drawing a line between the iPhone and iPad.
