MacBook Pro specifications and model differences

The A1989, A2159, A2251 and A2289 look similar, with a 13.3-inch Retina screen and an aluminium housing. Their internal differences affect the faults they develop, how we repair them and which parts we use.

• A1989, 2018 and 2019, and A2159, 2019: These models have keyboards with the more sensitive “Butterfly” mechanism. After a few years of use, keys often stick due to dust, crumbs or wear. The A1989 has four “Thunderbolt 3”, USB C, ports, while the A2159 has two.

• A2251 and A2289, 2020: Apple returned to the more reliable scissor mechanism with the Magic Keyboard in these models. Keyboard faults are less common. They use 8th or 10th generation Intel Core processors, with cooling systems that have either one fan or two.

• A feature common to all models: All these MacBook Pros have the Apple T2 security chip. It controls data encryption, “Touch ID”, cooling, audio processing and battery operation. Because of this chip, board repair must be carried out by a technician who understands the T2 architecture and the diagnostic process well.

MacBook Pro 13″ repair services we provide

• Screen module (LCD) replacement: We replace the entire screen module, including the display panel and aluminium lid. Afterwards, we check the True Tone sensors, brightness, colour reproduction, camera and hinges.

• Keyboard replacement: Depending on the model, we replace Butterfly keyboards in the A1989 and A2159, or Scissor keyboards in the A2251 and A2289. We usually replace the complete upper housing, the Top Case, for a more stable result and a neat assembly.

• Trackpad and Touch Bar repair: These components are sensitive to liquids and impacts. If the Trackpad is unresponsive, hard to press or has lost Force Touch feedback, we check the module, cables and control circuits.

• Motherboard (Logic Board) micro-soldering: We repair component-level faults. We restore broken circuits, replace power management IC chips and PWM controllers, clean corrosion after liquid exposure and check for short circuits.

• Operating system and software servicing: We update macOS, restore the system after Kernel Panic errors, transfer data, create Time Machine backups and check disk health.

• Speaker and audio system replacement: We fix crackling, muffled sound and loss of sound. Common causes are torn speaker membranes, liquid damage or damaged audio circuit components.

Battery replacement

In MacBook Pro computers from 2018 to 2020, Apple uses lithium-polymer batteries of about 58.0 to 58.2 Wh. Exact capacity depends on the model; operating voltage is 11.36 V or 11.41 V. The battery is firmly glued to the upper housing, the Top Case. Safe removal requires specialist solvents, protective measures and careful work.

When does a MacBook Pro 13″ battery need replacing?

1. Cycle limit: After more than 500 to 600 charging cycles, capacity often falls below 80 percent. System settings then show “Service Recommended”, indicating that the battery needs servicing.

2. Battery swelling: Gas buildup causes the cells to swell. This is dangerous: the battery presses against the Trackpad, making it stiff or hard to press, and can deform the bottom aluminium cover.

3. Charging problems: The battery itself is not always to blame. The fault is sometimes caused by SMC control, power circuits, USB C ports or charging controllers. We check these assemblies before the replacement.

Our technicians will run tests and usually replace the battery within 1 to 2 hours. After the repair we check charging, cycle readings, temperatures and safe battery operation.

Cooling system maintenance for your Intel processor

The MacBook Pro 13″, A1989, A2159, A2251, A2289, uses powerful Intel processors that generate considerable heat. The thin aluminium housing leaves little room for airflow, so the cooling system needs to stay clean and work reliably.
